DIAGNOSE – POWER DOOR LOCKS DON’T WORK PROPERLY

By Carl O’Reilly

SYMPTOM SUMMARY
The power door locks are all inoperative or a single door lock is inoperative.

USUAL CAUSE
The power door locks utilize individual solenoids in each of the doors that activate the door lock mechanism. The switch provides power to the door lock solenoids. To lock the doors the switch provides voltage to the two terminals of the solenoid. To unlock the doors the switch reverses the polarity of the voltage applied to the solenoid. An inoperative power door lock can be caused by the switch, solenoid, wiring problem or mechanical problem within the linkage of the affected door.

DIAGNOSIS
If all of the door locks are inoperative, start your diagnosis at the fuse box. Inspect the fuse that protects the door lock circuit to ensure it is not blown. Consult the fuse box placard or your owners manual for fuse designations and ratings. Operate each door lock switch in the vehicle to determine if the doors can be locked with any of the switches. If the doors lock with any one switch the most likely problem is a defective switch on the door that is inoperative. If all of the door lock switches are functional but one door fails to operate, the most likely problem is an open circuit in the circuit between the switch and solenoid or a defective solenoid in the affected door. You should listen to the affected door while energizing the door lock. If a click is heard but the lock did not engage, a problem with the door lock mechanism or linkage is the most likely cause.

PRECAUTIONS, TIPS, and NOTES
An inspection of the rubber boot and wiring harness that connects from the door frame and the door can often reveal wiring damage. A volt meter, available at any auto parts store, can be used to check the voltage to the individual lock solenoids and switches. Refer to the meters instruction for proper usage and precautions.

        • soba says:

read the manual, you might have to lock the boot in a special way to connect it to central locking, or check the wiring to the lock and likage

my issue is I have a 2005 Nissan Altima sle I received it from my sister, and the under dash was taken apart because she lost the key..I got key and most everything put back but one issue…I have a grey module that I can’t seem to figure out where it plugs back into…my car cranks but won’t start..also my doors don’t lock/unlock and my windows are not working either we are praying this is all due to the module…do you know where it plugs in? It is located in with my fusebox

      • Steve says:

It’s a module issue that links key fob to car

    • Libbie says:

I have the same problem of my driver door not unlocking when its hot outside. It will unlock with the key, just not with the key fob or electric button on the inside. Did you get any ideas on what the problem could be.

    • Joe Pagliero says:

My 1997 2500 Suburban has a different twist.

The lock/unlock switch on the driver side arm rest will not activate the door locks.

But….. They all function automatically by locking when the truck is started and placed in gear and by unlocking when the truck is shut off.

I checked the fuse box and found #13 fuse blown. It pops immediately when a fuse is installed.
It is labeled “cig liter” but the cigarette lighter works even when this fuse is unplugged.
I metered the fuse slot and see the top terminal is hot (12v) and the lower peg is a hard ground.

I tore the driver door apart and inspected all wires and found nothing apparent. I even replaced the door lock switch but it didn’t change anything. I now have a spare, I believe.

This problem started while at the dealer getting a winter service. They kept it for 5 days and returned it un-repaired but without any cost.

Anyone have an idea how to troubleshoot this?
I am also having intermittent problems with the rear barn door lock. It is intermittent – so I took that door apart and disconnected the solenoid. It won’t lock, but I don’t have to crawl over seats to get it open.

Please let me know if I am missing something or if any of you have seen something similar.

Happy New Year – and best wishes for the entire year.

      • Meanie Simms says:

I started having the same problems after it rained one night. The Rubber seal that goes around my passenger front door on the top front was torn and hanging down inside the car right over all the buttons on the side of the car that control the windows in the doors. I have to manually lock in and lock all my doors but a strange thing happens when I try to lock the doors from the driver’s side button they won’t do anything and the button doesn’t make any noise and it looks like I can see light down underneath the button in the dark. So as I was driving just a little ways all of a sudden I heard the noise of the switch and I thought Oh weird it automatically locked all my doors. But when I turned on the light know they were all unlocked. Now I’m thinking that the two times recently that I manually locked all the doors and I came back out and they were all unlocked it was because the car even though it was turned off activated the lock and unlock all the doors by itself. Either that or I have a poltergeist in the car LOL.

    • Dauda jalloh says:

Whel the central lock motor is the problem

  2. Robert says:

Put the key in the lock to unlock the door and the key turn 360. Will not not unlock the door. Have to unlock from the inside once get in from the other side. Have to pull up the door lock.

    • Matt says:

Robert, the likely cause is that the plastic clip on the back of the lock cylinder is either broken or has otherwise become detached from the linkage that allows you to manually unlock the car with a key. It is also likely that there are other problems with the cylinder as it should not rotate 360 degrees you may want to consider replacing it or having a locksmith take a look and see if they can salvage the current lock.

  5. Jim Huber says:

Hi Carl – I’m trying to help a friend diagnose door lock problems with his 2008 Chevy Malibu. The interesting aspect of his problem is that when he first gets into the car, he can actuate (open/close) all four door locks. If he tries doing it again, only three of the door locks actuate. If he tries it yet again, only two actuate. He gets to the point where only the right rear door lock functions. It’s also the case that each time he actuates the system, there is sound in the other lock solenoids, but it gets weaker with each actuation. If he turns the car off and then on again immediately, this situation persists (i.e. only the right rear door lock works). However, if he lets the car sit long enough (I’m not sure how long is long enough), the system seems to reset and the same pattern as described above reoccurs.

To me it sounds like whatever device (solid state relay in the body control module?) is supplying the current to actuate the solenoids is able to supply sufficient current the first time the system is actuated but then degrades with each subsequent actuation. Stated differently, I’m wondering if some device in the body control module is failing such that each actuation results in it having a reduced capacity to supply current. Have you ever heard of such a thing?

    Thanks,

    Jim

im having the same damn problem with my chevy malibu 2009

      • Jarrett says:

Very similar. .’09 Malibu. Only driver door and right rear have trouble. The key always unlocks the driver’s door, no problem.

      • Earl says:

I have the same problem,2008 malibu ltz 39000 miles it started at 25000 miles. The bcm was replaced under recall,

    • sm says:

i have the exact same problem in my 08 malibu. After the the BCM recall issue for the brake lights this is happening more. The car has been in the dealership for over 3 weeks, and they are no help at all. I’m pretty sure the BCM or something on it is causing this. What did you find out???

    • Nick says:

I’m having the exact same issue with my 2008 Impala. Any ideas?

      • John Wangensteen says:

has anyone found a solution to this problem?

    • Tiffany Gunn says:

Was there ever an answer to this? I’m having this problem in my 2002 4runner

  6. kev says:

Hi, simple problem. My power locks work but will not move to actually lock/unlock the doors. I can hear the locks working with both the remote and the door switches. The lock tabs will jerk but ultimately will not move to lock/unlock positions. This is happening on a 1999 Ford F150. What could be the likely solutuion?

    • james says:

      Hey Kev,

more than likely the actuators are out, You-tube for a disassembly video on your truck. You can either rebuild the actuators by an extra 20 minute per unit, time investment, as the resistor goes bad, and that entails breaking open the little drive motor and wrapping resistor in foil and placing back, from the comments, ppl say this fix last for the life of the truck. You can You tube that actuator rebuild also, there’s some great stuff there which will help you way more than a black and white Haynes manual with poor grainy photos. That will save $35-40 per actuator or just you can buy new actuators online or via local parts store. I’ve had several fleet F250s with power locks and you can tell they are going out as they start to get weak. while you have your door apart, make sure you lubricate all plastic parts with silicone, all metal parts with a light grease or oil. The less resistance this whole assembly has the longer I believe it will last.

    • Carol says:

Same thing with my 2008 Malibu, My husband is disabled and has to wait while I crawl across the seat to open his door. Not good in rain, snow, extreme heat. Drivers door is starting to do the same thing as are the rear doors. Trunk has done it a few times lately. Sometimes door lock is up but door is locked resulting in alarm going off if door is opened before I hit the remote. Starting to really P*** me off! How would I report it to GM and would they care?

  7. Cammi says:

I have a 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan. Whether using the key remote, or the button inside the van, the 2 sliding doors may or may not lock/unlock. There’s no real rhyme or reason as to when they work. You can hear the sound, and sometimes see a slight movement, but they do not always lock or unlock.

If this is not something I can fix myself, do I take the vehicle to a mechanic or someone special? My vehicle was just gotten into last night (probably a crime of opportunity) and my GPS was stolen and I’m getting annoyed. Thanks!

  8. Andy says:

I have a 2004 Pontiac Montana and my power locks work only with remote not on the switches at the door. I hope you have a solution for me. Thanks

  9. Wes says:

I have a Pontic 2002 Montana it to only locks with the remote? Do you know what the issue is?

  10. ian says:

My alarm goes off in my car no matter what i do. Even if the keys inn ignition and i do the least of just pressing the unlock button my security system goes off. I believe the problem is that one of my doors(rear passenger) doesn’t lock our unlock when i press the button. What do i do ? Its driving me mad.

  11. Jamie says:

My right lock makes a horrible sound when I lock with the my button device.

  12. Sarah says:

I have a 2014 chevy impala. My issue is with the front passenger side door.

It will not lock/unlock if trying to use my fob. While all other doors have no problem with it. The door also does not respond to the power lock/unlock button on the inside, although all other doors again have no problem.

It will lock if I manually lock it with my key from the outside, or manually with the lock switch on the inside.

Best way to go about diagnosing and fixing?

    • Jim says:

First I must ask why you wouldn’t take the car back to the dealer and make it their problem on such a new vehicle? The best way to diagnose and repair would be to first remove the right front inside door panel. Since it doesn’t respond to the key fob or the power lock switch the problem is in the lock solenoid or the wiring to the solenoid. I would guess on such a new vehicle the harness connector just came unplugged from the solenoid (or actuator). With a volt meter you should have 12 volts at 1 wire going into the solenoid and ground at the other wire. These 2 wires just reverse polarity when you attempt to reverse the direction of the locks, either lock or unlock. I you have 12 volts and a ground then the solenoid is defective.

  13. Rich says:

Carl – Love your insight! I hope you can shed some light on this mystery…

    2004 Honda Accord (4dr)

Symptom #1: – when locking/unlocking the car with key fob, key or inside driver door switch, the driver side door will lock/unlock. The other 3 doors remain unaffected. All three doors went out at the same moment.

Symptom #2: – After the driver side door is unlocked, within 1 min, the door will lock. This happens if the door is open, or closed, whether the car is running or not. This is not the standard Honda safety auto-locking feature.. this is a random locking within 1 min or less. I suspect that this started to occur at the same time as Symptom #1, though I didn’t notice it until I locked myself out of the car (while running) a week later.

Thanks in advance for the help…..

    • Jessica says:

I’m having this issue, did you ever find the problem?

      • Eddie Poe jr says:

Yes I got my locks working again but it was a total fluke. I was checking all my fluids under the hood and noticed the battery cables had some corrosion built up. Long story short, the battery was not connected for about 20 or 30 minutes. After finishing the clean up a connecting the battery back up I started resetting my presets on the stereo, getting out as a joke I pushed the door lock button and they WORKED!! The only reason I can give is something reset or a relay became unstuck when the power was disconnected. I hope you have the same dumb luck I had on this! I’d say check the battery cables and if they are clean unhook them for a while, haha it might just work!!

  14. wayne says:

The driver’s side on my 2004 Mazda3 is locked and cannot be unlocked with the remote or with the key. The key will not turn to the unlock position. This door also cannot be opened from the inside by manually toggling the unlock button or by activating the electric lock switch.

When the remote is activated, no sound is heard in the driver’s door. Both power door fuses test functional. All other doors unlock/lock as per normal from outside and inside.

    • Oak says:

      Hi Wayne,

I am experiencing this same problem now! Do you have any advice on how to fix it?

Some forums suggest that I should remove the inner panel/trim of the door to access the lock mechanism. This seems to be a challenge given that the door is still closed.

Any guidance you can provide would be appreciated.

      Thanks!

i press the unlock button on my car remote and only the passenger and driver doors open. but sometimes one of the back back doors opens. in some rear occasions all the doors unlock properly.

  17. doree says:

Hello — my passenger side door unlocks manually with no problem, locks with the switch on the driver’s side door no problem. The driver’s side door used to open manually, but now I cannot get it to open using my key. It has never unlocked by using the power switch (I have to pull it up by hand), nor does it lock by using the power switch.

In order to lock ANY doors, I have always had to hold the driver’s side inside door handle out while pressing down on the power lock button on the driver’s side door.

As of late, the driver’s side door not only will not unlock by using my key, but now, when I go in from the passenger side and pull up on the button, as soon as I pull on the door handle, it automatically locks the driver’s side door. So… I discovered that I have to pull out the inside driver’s side door handle while pulling up on the lock button at the same time, then throw the door wide open and hope that it stays open.

Do I have one main problem going on here, or a few?

Hello i have a 95 Nissan Sentra and I have been having problems with the doors locking and unlocking by itself. Im finally fed up with it today someone actually ransacked my car and left all the doors wide open although they did not take anything. I do not want my car to be missing one of these days. So to begin my window switches on both the passenger doors do not work. My main switch has been programmed to where I had to rewire the rear passenger button to be able to control my driver side window but the problem has been going on long before I had to do this. Thanks ahead of time.

Hi, I have a 2006 Crown Vic P71. All the door locks stopped working yesterday evening after working fine. Do you think something as went bad in that module?

I have a 2003 Nissan Micra 3dr (new shape) – since buying it this April I’ve had nothing but trouble withthe driver front door – sometimes I unlock the door and it doesn’t unlock properly, sometimes I lock it and it doesn’t lock – the passenger door and boot all lock fine. At the beginning, the central locking system was going AWOL and would click hen I turned a corner or something like that but since changing the battery in the remote this has not happened. I’ve taken it to a Nissan dealership and they said it was the door lock actuator as it still makes the locking noise but doesn’t lock. They wanted around £180 for the part and to fit it but couldn’t 100% guarantee that that would fix the problem. PLEASE HELP ME. If there is a chance that it could be done NOT by a mechanic then please let me know

I changed out a door switch on the driver side which didn’t help either. This is a 4 dr sedan. I can hear all 3 doors clicking except the driver side front door. Does the front driver side door link to all the other doors? I figured that the door actuators only pertain to each door. Not sure what the issue is? I wouldn’t think it’s a fuse only because I can hear the 3 doors clicking. Now, again, the front driver side door I can’t hear any clicking. Can you tell me what my next step should be?

I have a 1986 Chevy Silverado K10 with auto door locks. It has an aftermarket alarm which activates the door locks with the remote keyless entry. The door locks began not opening – – keyless entry will disarm but the door locks don’t open; I have to lock/unlock the door with the key. My friend, who owns the company that installed the alarm system, took a look at it and says it is in the truck, not the alarm system or alarm wiring.

This was intermittent a couple of times – took it to him twice and the locks mysteriously started working again. I went to start it today and the battery was dead. When I hook a battery booster to it, the locks pulse every 30 seconds or so like they are trying to unlock, but they don’t unlock. I assume this is what killed the battery.

I disconnected the battery and have it on a trickle charger. Any ideas where to start looking when the battery is charged?

I have a ’92 Nissan Pathfinder and it’s been at the shop for 2 months now, off and on. When I first took it there all locks worked properly but one window wouldn’t operate by itself; had to operate it from master switch on driver’s side. When the car is on or when the key is in and I open the driver’s side door, it will make the unlock sound (3x) but will not actually unlock. I have taken it to the dealership as it is under warranty. They told me that there’s a failure with the door lock assembly. I would just like to know your professional insight on this issue and how this can be fixed. They are taking a long time to address my warranty claim and I am just patiently (almost losing it) waiting. Thank you so much for your help.

Hi, I need some direction, please. I have a 2001 Toyota Avalon XLS. I’m also having door lock problems. I can lock and unlock the doors with the remote but not with the key.
I can put the key into all 3 locks -the lock of the driver side, the passenger door lock and the trunk lock, fully. It will not turn at all in either the driver or trunk lock. In the passenger lock it turns to the right which is the lock position. Is this an electrical problem or what should I be looking for? Please advise. I have the fear that I will not be able to get in one day. Thanks for your help.

Honda Accord 2004. When I use my fob to lock my Honda the driver’s side door lock doesn’t lock. If I lock the doors manually from the inside the driver’s side door doesn’t lock. If I lock the doors manually, from the outside by inserting my key into the keyhole all my doors will lock. If I try to open the doors with my fob at this point, the doors do not respond. Then I manually open the doors by inserting the key into the keyhole and turning it to the right, the driver’s side door will open, but not any of the others. It takes another key turn to the right or the fob to unlock the other three doors. Up until four weeks ago, everything was working. Is it possible that the car’s locking sequence or program was changed accidentally or is my locking mechanism broken?

Hi Allison, it sounds like it might be one of the door switches isn’t making a full circuit properly. If one of the door switches doesn’t work properly the alarm still thinks one of the doors is open. Likewise if a door switch is faulty because the circuit believes the door is open the light will remain on until the switch is sorted out.

I also find that when using the alarm system to lock/unlock the car the doors automatically lock within seconds of unlocking. However, this only occurs in colder weather.

Press key fob second time, only the doors on the right side respond. This is also the case when using the key to manually lock/unlock and when engaging the locking mechanism from the inside. I’m not sure if it’s an electrical problem or if perhaps it’s the component within the door itself that should be locking/unlocking. I know there could be a number of causes but I’d like to start what may be the most common cause and work my down from there.

I have a 2003 Ford F150 supercab. My locks worked fine one day, and then they all stopped working at the same time. Neither the switch on the two front doors or on my keychain work. I have been told it is the actuators, the one of the switches itself, or a slew of other things. It is not the maxi fuse under the hood. Any suggestions?

  94. I have checked the fuse in my car that connects to the locks and it looked fine. I replaced it just to be sure, but the locks still don’t work on the drivers or passengers side. I think it unlikely that both switches went out at the same time, but I can try getting both of them fixed. Any suggestions?

Hello, I have a 2009 Seat Altea XL 1.9TDI and this is going to sound ridiculous but since about 2 weeks ago my front passenger door will not usually open from the outside irrelevant of whether the central locking is on or off, so we have to open it from the inside. Once opened from the inside, you can then close and open it from the outside as many times as you like and it will be OK while it is stationary. The problem comes when you move off and on changing up from 1st to 2nd gear, the front passenger door clicks and as soon as that happens if you pull up (turn off central locking) and try and open it from the outside it will not open! It doesn’t matter if you go up and down through the gears or anything else, it just happens on the change from 1st to second. Even if you drive off a bit but stay in gear it will open from the outside! Any ideas anyone as we will shortly be emigrating and it looks like I am going to have a repair bill, in order to sell my car :/

  96. Kate Yilmaz says:

What should I do next: relay, bcm (hope not), not sure what to do next. Last resort take to a service shop.

The horn will chirp twice when arming the locks with the remote keyfob as if a door is not closed ( the doors are actually all locked). All doors are shut because the dash ‘door ajar light’ is not on. The interior light and passenger exterior mirror lights stay on for 10 minutes then turn off by the battery saver. The driver mirror light does not illuminate at all, but when checking it found out the bulb is ok. The drivers side door lock switch will not lock the doors with the key out of the ignition. The keyless entry will sound the horn when try to unlock the doors with the code. When pressing 7/8 and 9/0 simultaneously to unlock the other doors there isn’t any response. I have pulled the latch out of the drivers door to check the door switch and find it is ok.

Hello. I have a ’09 Honda CRV with a rear, driver’s side door lock that seems to have a mind of its own. The other 3 door locks seem to be fine. This lock opens and immediately re-locks itself as soon as any command to open doors (from any source – door master open/lock button, key fob, or placing the car in park) is made. The lock also seems to be stuck as manual attempts to open it are futile as it will, again lock itself. At times, previously, it would lock and unlock itself as the car was in motion (lock itself as you accelerated from a stop and unlock itself once you came to a stop). Any thoughts? Thanks!

Here is my story. It is a 2002 Honda Accord, 4cyl special edition. Years ago the rear right door lock quit working, but that is just extra info. The other three door locks work fine when it is not hot. However, when it is hot (104 F) like it was today the locks do not respond to any of the switches (driver, front passenger). Also, today the front passenger window would not work with either the driver switch or the door switch. Whether cooled down and the window started to respond. Turned on the air conditioning and git the car very cool inside and THE LOCKS BEGAN TO WORK. I don’t have a clue. Is there some integrated circuitry involved in the windows and locks that is heat might cause electrical problems? I don’t know how to use these chat sites. I hope I can figure out how to check back for any response/answers. Thanks in advance for your help.

Both the fob and door buttons would not operate the malfunctioning door locks at the time they were acting up. I have a remote start. Any ideas? It can’t be actuators failing one at a time around the car. I’m stumped!

2011 Ford Focus. When nearing the vehicle with key fob in hand and without actually hitting the buttons, the locks will engage and disengage on their own. Now the locks will disengage. I just have the problem with them engaging/disengaging.

I have an 05 F150 Lariat super cab, all door locks and buttons stopped working at once. The drivers door will unlock with the driver side panel unlock button. All other buttons only produce a clicking noise at the specified solenoid. The keyless entry pad and keychain remote do not lock or unlock any door but the keychain remote will make the lights operate on or off and horn chirps affirming the doors are locked when they are not! At the same time the instr. panel lights do not come on when the headlamp switch is in the automatic position. Switching from off to automatic the lights blink and a click from solenoid in kick panel can be heard. All other dash lights operate just fine. This may not be related to the locks but they both stopped working at the same time. My truck only has 69000 miles and is in excellent condition so rust should not be a problem. All related fuses are good.
Anyone have same or similar problem?

2003 Chevy Avalanche. Remote quit opening any/all doors. One remote replaced approx 3 yrs ago. New batteries in both remotes, no help. Hit inside door lock/unlock & it works like it should. Key in drivers door it’s like unlocking a manual lock/unlock system. Key in passenger side it unlocks quickly and easy like it always has and should work.

Would driver’s side need new actuator? But it works good when I hit lock/unlock button inside the vehicle

Hi there, I have a question to ask. I have a 2008 mazda 3i. I can unlock all of the doors with the remote, driver/passenger door lock switch; but I can not lock the doors. This happens all the time now. Fuses is fine and I find from the dealer that my car does not have a door lock relay. I’m guessing it’s the driver door lock actuator. If this is the case how come I can’t lock the door from the passenger side either.

We are restoring an 1989 Toyota Van LE RWD (JT3YR26W9K5052625) but we have not been able to correct the problem in the Locking devise. The POWER WINDOW MASTER SWITCH has a rocker switch (the first one in the component), it LOCKS/UNLOCKS the doors.
Presently this switch will LOCK the doors, but will not UNLOCK the doors. Is this item repairable, or must we locate a new / used POWER WINDOW MASTER SWITCH?

Carl….I found reading your web page very informative….and wondered whether you could answer a question… I have an old Mk5 astra and the central locking sounds as if its operating. However, if I I press the fob once to loc doors when I attempted to remotely open doors non of them work. However if I double click fob to set deadlock, when i press fob to open doors, all doors open except back passenger near side. My question is this…is it possible that the lock/actuator/switch is faulty in the back passenger near side door…And could this one locking mecahism be causing the problems with all the other doors as Ive outlined above? Cheer Steve (Wales, UK)
